Accelerating Healthcare Digital Transformation Through Collaborative Strategy
The Challenge
A premier children’s hospital serving an entire midwest state needed to modernize their digital presence to compete with top-ranked Chicago hospitals while responding to actual patient and family needs rather than internal organizational structure. With a development partner selection pending, they required rapid execution once the team was in place.
Strategic Approach
Rather than following the standard healthcare website playbook, I led my team to answer critical questions upfront, enabling fast, collaborative progress with design and development teams. We established a decision-making framework to handle unexpected challenges and disputes—crucial for maintaining momentum when working with multiple stakeholders.
Business Impact
The design-to-development handoff was completed in half the typical time for comparable healthcare digital transformation projects.
Leadership & Execution
Market Context & Differentiation Strategy Healthcare organizations have historically been about a decade behind retail companies in digital adoption, and recent modernization efforts have resulted in very similar approaches to organization, functionality, and design. This hospital wanted to stand out by focusing on what patients actually need, based on understanding how they really behave, while also making their website easier to maintain and manage.

Rapid Validation Through Healthcare Expertise Using years of healthcare industry experience, I implemented an approach that quickly delivered foundational user profiles and patient journeys to stakeholders. This enabled immediate feedback and helped us understand what made their situation unique—moving beyond typical presentation-heavy processes to guided discussions and collaborative working sessions focused on insights rather than polished documents.

Data-Driven Decision Making Our iterative approach uncovered important insights that resolved typically difficult decisions. For example, discovering that patients mainly entered through location or doctor profile pages ended heated debates about what should go on the homepage. Despite limited client data (due to recent healthcare privacy court decisions), we supported our recommendations with industry research and direct patient feedback through surveys and interviews.
Stakeholder Alignment & Internal Advocacy This collaborative approach built stronger, more trusting relationships with the core client team. By participating directly in the discovery and strategy work rather than just receiving presentations, they became effective advocates for the emerging vision with other internal stakeholders. The iterative nature made it easy to create compelling presentations for additional stakeholders when needed.
Operational Excellence Through Parallel Development My leadership enabled us to work on design, content, and technical planning at the same time as product strategy—significantly speeding up delivery. Starting everything earlier and keeping everyone working together minimized handoffs and eliminated rework. The client was fully committed to decisions because they had participated in making them, replacing time-consuming presentation development with productive collaborative work sessions.
